games
And here it is, finally. Version 1.0 of the helicopter flight simulator is now available. Go download and play. (Send comments).
Here is the link to Absar who wrote the game. You’ll find plenty more information about it over there. There’s also a small article with system requirements here. 3D Mesh and texture credits go to Saqib. You can also browse through this very site for more information on this game.
Absar will be writing a little intro to the game. How to play and stuff. I’ll link to it as soon as its done.
Enjoy.
Update: There is now a small introduction and formal briefing for the game here. Do read the tips before you try the game.

best practices,
site updates
Yes I do. From now on. Here’s my public key.
If you don’t know much about gpg and protecting your privacy go here. Its a (relatively) small manual detailing how you can protect your documents and email from prying eyes. I don’t know about you, but the idea of someone else reading through my email gives me the creeps.
Also, in the news today. I have updated my main site. Its not linked on the main page yet. You can access it through here. Tell me how it looks, and if you think I need to change anything, just comment.
Its hardly a complete website. Still, a journey of a thousand steps …. yadda yadda.

This is by far the best way of learning a new language I have ever seen. Where were these guys when I was trying to learn C? Where were they when I was trying to learn the alphabet for that matter?
I dont know much about python yet, but I’m getting there. And from what I can see of the language, it pwns. It’ll be very difficult to go back to C/C++ (at least on the PC) after my python experience. C still rules the embedded platform, but on a powerful computer, which doesn’t mind a bit of slowing down (although I’m told the python interpreter is pretty fast), python rocks.
So here’s to my newest project: learning python.

My God! I can’t believe the government is doing this.
… Oh wait. This is Pakistan. :)
Here are some excerpts. From the second floor
…
For two hours yesterday, Barrister Zahid Jamil scared the living daylights out of everyone who showed up at T2F for the session on the E-Crime Bill 2007. We had heard rumors about this draconian Bill but it wasn’t until all the arcane legalese was presented in “normal” language, that we actually “got it”.
The E-Crime Bill is BAD NEWS. Please do not be misled by the letter “E” and dismiss this Bill as some kind of “techie thing”. The E-Crime Bill 2007 affects film-makers, journalists, home-makers, accountants, bankers, graphic designers, teachers, lawyers, consultants, poets, et al: It affects every Pakistani who uses a computer or a mobile phone…
This one is from The Lootmar Blog

In addition to botching up basic definitions of spoofing, phishing, spamming and malicious code, the wording of the law, if introduced, can get you thrown in prison for up to seven years, if you do any one of the following:
1) Legal-speak: Send an email that contains indecent language
Translation: Utter a certain four letter word.
2) Legal-speak: Threaten any immoral act
Translation: What is morality, and what does it have to do with the law? What kind of cretins draft these bills?
3) Legal-speak: Make any proposal of an obscene nature
Translation: Make a movie plan for Khuda ke liyay with a fundo mistakenly on copy.
4) Legal-speak: Whoever transmits unsolicited electronic messages in bulk
Translation: Send 5 emails to introduce your product to customers.
5) Legal-speak: Whoever involves in falsified online user account registration
Translation: Create a hotmail account under an assumed name.
6) Legal-speak: A corporation shall be held liable for a criminal offence committed on its instructions or for its benefit
Translation: Do nothing. If your employees without your knowledge, permission or approval do something improper, which brings any benefit to your company, then FIA has the grounds to shut you down…
This seriously affects all of us. Every blogger who reads this, please blog it. Tell your blogger friends about it and get something done while you’re at it.

Cleaning up code is a real pain. Cleaning up code that works, only to find that it has stopped working when you cleaned it up, is an even greater pain.
Confirming to code standards is a real pain. Confirming to standards that you’ve set yourself because your company doesn’t have any is an even greater pain.
Trying to improve the way you handle projects is a pain, but definitely worth it.
Watching a season of Boston Legal is not a pain.
