Half-Life 2: Portal could very well be the most entertaining game I have played yet. No monsters, no weapons, heck there isn’t even a HUD! Why? Because it would have just distracted from the goal of the game, which is to solve puzzles, using portals (and thus the title).

The game takes place in the Aperture labs. Followers of the Half-Life series will realize this is the same place mentioned in Half-Life 2: Episode 2. You play a test subject and are supposed to solve a series of puzzles using the new portal technology developed at Aperture.

A typical game scene

Along the way, you get to hear the computer announcer make remarks that are at times humorous. These serve to progress the story, and make you realize how sadistically you’re being treated. I won’t give away the ending, but its worth having to play the game through, which by the way isn’t too long. The length of the game is in the sweet spot that recent Half-Life installments have been occupying. Not too short to leave you wanting more, and not too long to frustrate.

I must say the end credits are also the best I have seen, and the end song is pretty cute. Here’s a quote from the song “Still Alive”,

Go ahead and leave me…
I think I’d prefer to stay inside…
Maybe you’ll find someone else
to help you?
Maybe Black Mesa?
That was a joke! HAHA!! FAT CHANCE!!

This game is not just for fans of Half-Life, but for all gamers who like a good brain-bash.

And here it is, finally. Version 1.0 of the helicopter flight simulator is now available. Go download and play. (Send comments).

Here is the link to Absar who wrote the game. You’ll find plenty more information about it over there. There’s also a small article with system requirements here. 3D Mesh and texture credits go to Saqib. You can also browse through this very site for more information on this game.

Absar will be writing a little intro to the game. How to play and stuff. I’ll link to it as soon as its done.

Enjoy.

Update: There is now a small introduction and formal briefing for the game here.  Do read the tips before you try the game.

The game is really getting polished these days. We (the Beta testers), are starting to give it a run on different computer configurations and seeing how it works. And now we’ve got a (low-res) gameplay video too! There’s also a neat little game launcher that you can use to setup simple options (like sound).

It looks like the final archive is gonna weigh around 12MB. Right now it has just one map, but there is an option to add more. And if our staff of graphics whizzes finds the spare time to do so, we’ll have more download-able scenarios in the future (yaay!).

It also feels a bit too complicated for first timers, and until you understand how to pilot the copter, it gets pretty frustrating. We’ve been asking Absar bhai to add a simpler “arcade” mode into the game. Poke him here to tell him to do so.

There’s a bit about the system requirements for the game here (scroll to the bottom). This is not final though, and it hasn’t been tested out on all types of systems, so you can expect this to change.

Thats all for now guys. Waiting for the day I get my hands on this one.

theabsar is putting finishing touches on his game mentioned before here. Now the game has some rudimentary AI. There are some APCs with rocket launchers spread throughout the game. These react to the presence of your helicopter and fire missiles at you, so that now not only do you have to hit crucial targets and increase your score, but you also have to fend off these APCs.

Again, we’re still looking for a killer name to give this game. Comment to give your suggestions.

Here are some screens of the new APCs in action.

Edit: theAbsar has uploaded some info on his website regarding this game that he’s decided to call Battle Wings.

This is one of theabsar’s earliest games. Go play. Preferably with headphones on. Its got some really crazy sound effects.

Basically there are 13 ghosts you have to lure into the cemented area in the middle of the park where you spawn. They’re scattered around the place. There is no mouse control (hey, its an old game), so you have to do some old-school “keyboard turning”. Its pretty hard to complete it, and I dont think it can even be done. But do try it once. Just for the sounds.

Methinks: What?? No screenies?

Isay: No. Not for this one. Maybe later. Dont have the inclination to reboot into Windows right now.
